Motzek Sweet Crushed Twist

(4.00)
A specialty tobacco from earthy Virginias that are refined with a tad of lively perique. A complex baking procedure conjures a tangy and full smoking-experience out of great tobaccos that's from medium strength.
Notes: Also available as a pre-cut version.

Appearance & Smell from the bag: S. crushed twist is - as the name already suggests - yet another twist by Tom Darasz. Why it is called "crushed" I can't figure out, it looks like all the other twists by Motzek. The appearance is really teasing, medium- to dark(er)-brown tones with a bit of golden-like bright leafs.

The smell from the bag is hypnotizing for me: It reminds me of a Yoghurt we have here in Germany. It's filled with crumbled cake pieces. It's a very similar scent, which reminds of sweet cake, with "Spekulatius" (Spekulatius= "spiced biscuit in the shape of a human or other figure, eaten at Christmas"). I also perceive the smell of salty- AND sweet-popcorn that has been buttered. The smell from the bag is rather sweet, yet it already hints that there is a lot of spice(s) in there. Once cut, the tobacco smell intensivies (almost all of Motzeks tobaccos only have a decent smell from th bag) and reveals the appetizing core:

A black core, with bright dots will greet you, as soon as you cut the twist. The smell from "Spekulatius", pepper, popcorn and other spices, as well as a tad of earth is streaming gently through the room.

As all Twists this one also comes pretty moist (after all that is / was the purpose of twists - long term storage without drying out), but 40-60 minutes are enough to keep it lit without any problems. Handling is a joy, as usual with twists. I just love the proceure of cutting the twist, cutting a few curlies with a cigar-cutter I have, some cubes, some fully rubbed out. It's part of the joy and I highly encourage anyone to take his/her time for this tobacco to maximize the pleasure of the ceremony.

The taste is IN-SANE! Yet another tobacco, I'd consider as a "Ying & Yang"-tobacco. 2 completly contrary components melt into something heavenly and unique taste-experience.

**YING:** As mentioned before, I'd consider this a "semi-aromatic", as the flavouring is there, yet the natural tobacco taste shines through excellently. The smell from the bag transmits exactly to the taste profile. Sweet crumbled cake pieces (also like unbaked cake-mixture) and "Spekulatius" (which is a spiced christmas cookie, that's more spicy than sweet) are the main actors of the flavouring added. I also think there's Molasses used.

**YANG**: The other side of the flavour-profile is the natural tobacco taste. The Virginias shine through really well and deliver deep and intense earthy notes, as well as a hint of citrus-ish (mown) grass. Slightly fermented fruit qualities. The Perique is a minor player, yet it is always present and easily detectable. It delivers a rich fruitiness that reminds mainly of raisins and plum and a tad of other dried- and fermented-fruits. The typical peppery spice is also there and makes the smoke lively and sparkling. There's also a slightly (Burley-like) nutty-tone in the back, which I'm not sure where it comes from.

YING+YANG melt into a unique flavour-profile, that's hard to categorize. It isn't pure tobacco, yet I'd strongly contradict to categorizing it as a "aromatic". This isn't what you think of when thinking "aromatic-blend"! "Semi-Aromatic" would be a fitting term. The tobacco isn't subdued by the casing/topping at all, and both components (Flavouring&Tobacco) form a whole.

I got to ask Tom Darasz what makes this tobacco so special. I guess it's kinda a secret, as he only stated briefly: "Yea, it's baked in a special way and real spices are added, too!" The real spices are easily detectable and form a bewitching melange with the tobaccos spice. What this "complex baking procedure" might be - I really don't know, if anyone has an idea please tell me!

Sweet Crushed twists forms a a trinity of (twist-)tobacco-goodness, together with it's "cousins" Tom´s dark Twist and "Hallo" Twist. I could spend my life only smoking these 3 tobaccos, without feeling I'd be missing out on something. Hallo Twist as all-day Va/Per; Dark Twist as the nightcap; S. crushed Twist as a special treat by times.

Sweet Crushed is an bewitching, almost magical smoking-experience to me. Tom Darasz managed to create an mildly aromated blend, where the natural tobacco can shine through really well. The flavouring, the spices, the tobaccos used - everything is in perfect balance and the "Ying&Yang" metaphor describes this tobacco perfectly.

Pipe Used: Clays, Cobs, Briars
