Dan Tobacco Shannon Flake

(4.00)
Virginia, burley and black cavendish mixed and topped with a fruity casing as in the Shannon tobacco. The difference is that to obtain these flakes the tobacco has been pressed once more. The result is a fine flake that crumbles easily. Easy to fill and to light. Burns slow and cool and gives a gently creamy smoke.

Don't confuse this with the Shannon tobacco blend. This is the flake version.

Opening the tin : the flakes are nicely wrapped, have a unusually fine structure and a deep brown colour speckled with orange and black. A fresh and sweet aroma meets you, reminding of virginia tobacco an citrus fruit.

Packing and first lighting : the tobacco falls apart in fragile ribbons and crumbs. It’s easy to pack and easy to light.

Smoking : this tobacco shouldn’t be packed tightly at all and needs little tamping, otherwise you won’t be able to finish the bowl without leaving a dottle. The bowl will not overheat. Relights are not needed.

Taste and smoke : the smoke is creamy and cool and there’s lots of it. I find it fun to take long, deep draws to create clouds of thick smoke as if I were smoking a cigar. The taste is not at all like that of a cigar, though. Fresh and gentle, almost unobtrusive, it leaves a light impression of something fruity or alcoholic on the palate. There’s no room note to speak of.

Advisable pipe size : Small, as the stuff burns very slowly, and narrow to make it glow instead of flare

Update 2020.04.08

The favouring seems much stronger now than it did some years ago but the taste is as I remember. It's very sweet, like a liquor. It leaves a sweet aftertaste that turns slightly sour before it gives you some far away hint of tobacco for a moment and then disappears.

If you're looking for an aromatic tobacco that gives you consistent pleasure throughout your smoke, then try this.

Uprating from three to four stars.
