The Paulina region perique has an earthy, slightly sour and peppery character, with a hint of coffee noticeable in the retrohale. Russ combined this with sweet Virginias and some unflavored black cavendish to bring out the best properties of this varietal for RO Series Perique Blend P-37.

The various Virginias offer some tangy citrus with a fair amount of grass and hay, and forms the base of the blend. The spicy, woody, earthy, lightly smoky and sour Paulina perique also has very mild plum and coffee characteristics as an important supporting player. The sugar from the unflavored black cavendish adds a smoothing quality in the background. The strength and taste levels are just short of medium. The nic-hit is a hair below the mild to medium threshold. Won’t bite or get harsh, but has a hint of a rough edge here and there. Burns cool, clean, slightly fast with a very consistent mildly sweet and savory, peppery, well balanced flavor which translates to the after taste. Easily burns to ash. Leaves little moisture in the bowl. Needs an average number of relights. Not quite an all day smoke, but experienced VaPer smokers may consider it to be one. Three and a half stars.

I just recently finished my first of two tins I have of this in the cellar and I enjoyed it more than the SV version, the only other I have yet tried. For that fact alone I am giving this one a fourth star as I gave that a 3 star.

Rating these is tricky. If I had to rate these based on how they compare to other VaBurPer type blends, they would be two star blends or perhaps lower. There are a few reasons why. The first is they are overwhelmingly about the perique which makes them incredibly spicy thus blocking most taste from the Burley (Cavendish in this one) and Virginia. I find the best of these blends gets a little from each element. Another reason would be how fast these things burn. If you have only 10 minutes to smoke a bowl, just pack this into a group 4 and you should be just about done in 10 minutes. lol

So this is a VBP type blend, but it isn't. This is something else. Something never really done before. Something special. In that regard I am holding a baseline of three stars with my favorites peaking to four. So, a four here, does not mean I like this as much as I do Dunhill Flake. And it doesn't come close Davidoff Flake Medallions for a tobacco with the same leaf composition. It is good, but in the world of VBP, I would choose several others.

Now to this particular perique. I found the Paulina to be more the fruity/spice profile that I expect from perique when I see it listed as a condiment. With all these blends, the Virginia adds an imperceptible amount of sweetness and the Cavendish does not add much to my taster, but does seem to cool the blend down a bit. Otherwise, this is spicy. Exactly as it should be.

So far this is my favorite of the series, so it is carrying the fourth star. This may change. In reality, the nature of these blends really demands that you buy at least one of each so comparisons can be made. This is for perique lovers only.
