The Country Squire Tobacconist P.S. Blend

(3.14)
This blend was the private blend of Paul Simmons, a long-time Squire regular who departed many years ago. Developed in the early 1970s, P.S. Blend is an exquisite hybrid blend, featuring elements of soft aromatic tobaccos blended with the finest Latakia flakes. This tobacco is semi-sweet, spirited, and rich in flavor.

Another great tobacco by the Squire. This blend is noticeable for being an aromatic and an English at the same time, and for getting the best of the two worlds together. Really easy to pack and to light, the smoke is a journey into a realm of flavours which overall blend together so well you'll really want to have another bowl soon after the first is gone! Highly recommended, as all the Squire blends.

The musty, leathery, sweet Cyprian Latakia produces plenty of smoke, earth, wood, some floralness, herbs, vegetation, light incense and spice as the lead component. The creamy, sugary, toasty black cavendish is a supporting player that acts mostly as a flavor carrier. The Virginias provide some tart and tangy citrus, grass, sugar, bread, mild darker fruit, earth, wood, floralness, and light spice in the third slot. The toppings are caramel, vanilla, marshmallow, bourbon, and chocolate. They are the star attractions, and fairly much tone down the tobaccos. The strength and taste are a couple of steps short of the medium threshold. The nic-hit almost reaches the center of mild to medium. There’s no chance of bite or harshness, and barely has a rough edge. The tobacco is mildly moist. Burns cool, clean and slightly slow with a very consistent sweet, smoky, mildly floral, lightly spicy flavor that extends to the short lived, pleasant after taste. The room note is pleasant, too. Leaves some dampness in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. An all day smoke. Three and a half stars.

I'm not sure how the one gentleman couldn't smell the Latakia? That is the main note coming from the bag. Along with a sweetness. It could be an all.day smoke for sure.

This is a really smooth all-day English Aro. Buttery, savory, and smokey Latakia goodness with a hint of butterscotch. It lit well and stayed lit to the bottom of the bowl. Surprising for a pouch just out of my mailbox. I will continue to keep this one stocked in my cellar.

To give you a hint from where my below impressions are coming from; I favor aromatic blends (vanilla being my favorite), although I am finding I enjoy English/Scottish blends more frequently, which I could not stand when I first started smoking a pipe. I have been trying more of the English/Aromatic combo blends, which I have found being more and more of that I am reaching for for my everyday smoke

Opening the bag what I smelled was sweetness (no specific flavor) and absolutely no Latakia. I mostly saw Black Cavendish and what looked like sprinkles of Virginia.

The flavor I tasted was sweetness, nothing else. This blend says it is "blended with the finest Latakia flakes", so I either got a bad batch or was wrongly labeled as there was not even a hint of Latakia there. I have been buying/trying many of their blends this past year and I also received a wonderful Christmas gift with 8 of their blends from a family member that lives near them. I have found that they tend to be very light on how much Latakia they use in their blends (that I have tried). At first I was trying to compare it to the "Black Arrow" blend, but at least with that blend I was able to taste individual flavors other than sweet...

It arrived semi-moist, no drying time was needed. Was able to light this without issue and stayed lit without any problem. I did not have any tounge-bite with this blend.

This blend is advertised as an English aromatic, but to me, it tastes like black Cavendish with a little bit of latakia. The result is phenomenal.

This blend seems like it has a different black Cavendish base than Black Arrow, but I wouldn't know why that would be the case. Maybe my particular bag just got more of the secret sauce. Nonetheless, I was very impressed with the flavors and complexity that popped out of this blend.

The base is very black Cavendish forward. So you get that mild, soft sweetness that all good Black Cavendish is known for. But this blend adds a depth and a smokiness that pokes through just enough to be interesting and never overwhelming. The latakia is smokey and campfire-y. It's lighter than most latakias that I am familiar with, as in there's no heavy barbecue channeling going on.

I have tried about a dozen TCS blends and at first puff, this one went to the top of the list. Honestly, it probably took Black Arrow as my preferred Cavendish blend from TCS.

A very pleasant English aromatic hybrid. Arrives a little moist, some drying time is recommended. Looks very black. Reminds me of Northwoods. Sort of boozy, chocolate, marshmallow aroma, reminiscent of those Charleston Chew candy bars. Flavor is about medium, as the topping sort of settles down the rest of the tobaccos in the blend. I have trouble finding any Latakia. Retrohale is very pleasant as is the room note. A fine gateway blend for aro smokers looking to explore an English type blend. Recommended. 3.5 stars.
