Samuel Gawith Demerara Flake

(3.50)
Hot pressed to give a well rounded and balanced tobacco: packed full of grassy, creamy and earthy flavours. Richer and bolder in comparison to Best Brown Flake but less punchy when compared to the iconic Full Virginia Flake. This offering uses a little Brown/Demerara sugar and cavendish to bring extra sweetness to the mix.

Samuel Gawith - Demerara Flake.

I adore most Sam Gawith blends so when I noticed this new release on the GQ website I just HAD to get some; it did not disappoint.

The flakes are dark in colour, they look as if they may contain more than just a little Cavendish. They're not black but a very dark brown with a small amount of light specks across them. They're as long as the pouch is wide, none of this business where the flakes are have been cut short! As expected from Sam G', they need drying; far too moist so if the pipe is lit before they've been given time to rest it will keep going out! The aroma from the pouch is slightly sweet but nothing too dramatic. It has an imploring smell where I can't wait to begin!

The flavour is great! It's aromatic but not too strong; it has a very noticeable amount of sweetness that has got to be from the sugar and not the Cav'. However it doesn't have a whopping amount of extra flavour. Extra sweetness but not extra flavour... if that makes sense?!

The flavour of the tobaccos are a little hard to differentiate; this is mainly due to the extra sweetness sort of masking the two constituents. I don't see this as a negative thing though, I enjoy the flavour I get a great deal.

For me, there isn't much nicotine. Mild, with it creeping slightly higher if/when strained.

I think this would be a perfect smoke for lovers of sweet Black Cavendish blends with a fear of added tastes like fruit, vanilla or anything floral.

Simply sweet! Highly recommended.

Got this wonderful flake from StevieB in a trade. Thanks for this great smoke, Steve.

I use Demerara sugar on the rare occasions that I sweeten my coffee. My ex-wife turned me on to it. It has a sweet mild toffee like flavor that doesn't quite translate to the smoke here. Instead I get a flavor that reminds me of when I was a kid in Mississippi and we would chew on sugar cane stalks. It's very similar to raw cane juice and brought back some long forgotten memories. Great stuff. The Virginias have the familiar SG flavor, but a little bit muted, possibly tamed by the Cavendish. This is just a fantastic smoke and a very pleasant surprise.

Mild to medium all the way around. I like to dry this very well which ensures a near perfect burn. Smokes the same in briar or cob. Thanks for suggesting this one, Steve. Great choice.

Demerara Flake is yet another great Sam Gawith flake that isn’t available in the US. Like most SG flakes, it arrives with way to much moisture and the thicker sliced flakes took quite a while to dry under a hot desk lamp. It was well worth the wait. I am a love of Best Brown and only a so-so fan of FVF. I find this flake to be a little closer to Best Brown as while there is a bit of grass/hay flavor similar to FVF, it has mostly the base notes found in Best Brown. The added brown sugar and Cavendish really translate very well to this flake. I wasn’t sure if they would overwhelm the smoke, but it is really done masterfully offering up a sugary, deeply flavored flake. There isn’t any hint of a Lakeland essence here, just great Virginia flavor with added sweetness that is never cloying. It burns cool and won’t bite even when pushed. Lady N never rises above medium. I can only be left to imagine what some time in the cellar!

I would have never expected this tobacco to have any Cavendish at all, but I believe the description being provided here. Now that I come to think of it, yes, it has that "I don't know what" that is telling me there is uncased English Cavendish here of some sort. The flakes I got are pretty thick and difficult to crumble, but despite their moist content, it seems like they can be smoked right out of the tin. They look very dark in colour and the tin note reveals this is one of the Lakelands, but this does not show in your smoke. Also, I am getting a slight note to vinegar, if ever so slightly though, when I stick my nose in the tin for a sniff. And again, despite the moist content they don't seem to smoke hot, which is a bonus. The taste is sort of medium with a sweet note to it that is probably coming from the Cavendish itself. These flakes seem to release plenty of flavour and we all know that Demerara is a type of sugar. I haven't been able to produce as much smoke as I would with other blends I am more used to, but I think these flakes are meant to be smoked at a very low pace. As for progression with your smoke, they seem to evolve quite nicely every quarter of your bowl. This backy is almost 4 stars, but thinner flakes would have done the trick, so I am only willing to rate with 3.

As stated in other reviews, I'm an aromatic smoker mainly, but I got a 10g sample of this just to try something new and different. Not a fan honestly. It's not bad in any way, it's just not for me. I prefer the sweeter, more dessert like aromatic tobaccos. Just seemed like pretty ordinary "plain" tobacco if such a thing existed. Like drinking DIet Coke when you'd rather have a regular Coke.

Positives: It doesn't taste like soap or BBQ sauce. It didn't make me feel ill.

Not one I'd personally buy again.

Looking for a sweet and well rounded tobacco this may be for you. I must say it takes the prize for wettest ever flake but I hold no grudge. If my tobacco came bone dry and degraded I would. It must be a hard game steaming and drying it even to this state and overall the enjoyment I got from my sample was worth more.

very dark brown long flake same style cut as best brown, I rubbed it out wet then dried it very near to dry more than most I smoke then rubbed it a bit more. From first light you get the usual Gawith quality thick rich creamy smoke. I like this more than best brown it has a heavy more rich taste and less floral/less hay like taste.

Now the bit you have all been waiting for the sweetness. Nice creamy sweet that lets you know in every toke it has been added. A good sweet that is right across the tongue not just on the tip of it. Never chemical or bitter or cloying and in no way sickly. In short toppings and leaf work I harmony for the best sweet flake smoke I am yet to try.

I would love to be able to add fruity creamy boozy flavours to this flake myself as it is to me like the base cream of many a good dessert. Towards the end of the smoke the topping is less and the rich cake notes of the tobacco come through. lighting and burning are excellent and zero bite for me. Not high nic content but the volume of smoke and great taste will keep you puffing away so regularly that you will not be left wanting. All in all a nice simple flake with some depth.
