Hearth & Home Drawing Room

(3.33)
Drawing Room is a rich and fragrant Latakia-based blend with a robust Oriental influence. Sweet, matured Virginias are combined with a hearty dose of Cyprian Latakia, and then finished with fine Izmir and just a touch of Perique for added body, sweetness, and spice. A great after-dinner smoke, unwind with full-bodied, exotic Drawing Room.
Notes: Introduced in 2015.

I just received this wonderful blend and although I usually like to wait and live with a tobacco, I feel that the character of this one is so well-defined that I'd give it a preliminary review. In fullness and body this one seems similar to Black House, however where that blend has a bit more sweetness balancing the Latakia, probably from the cavendish, this one has got more of that wonderful sourness and tang from the Orientals. It's almost as if it has the best properties of Black House and White Knight combined. I love the sour tang this blend has and the Latakia is still very present,, but certainly not stealing the show. The sweetness from the Virginias are there as well, and to be honest, I thought the Perique component was barely there, maybe just supporting the other players. The moisture content was just about right in my portion, and this burns cooly and fully right through the duration. So far, I would peg this one notch up in taste and body from White Knight--just wonderful and highly recommended!

First impressions are what tend to make or break you, and all I can say is that Drawing Room truly impresses me. I have been smoking on a four ounce bulk sample for a while now, and have really enjoyed each smoke. The tin note of the tobacco shows that this is definitely a Latakia forward blend and smells, woodsy, smoky, leathery, and slightly spicy. The tobacco seems to be of high quality and the cut is a fine ribbon that does not contain any twiggy or woody bits in it. The moisture level of the tobacco was spot on perfect when I received it and due to the moisture level and cut, the tobacco was easy to pack and took a light with minimal effort. In my opinion, the taste of the tobacco at first light showcased the Latakia and the Perique. The Latakia lends a thick creaminess to the blend and the Perique let itself be known by the tingle on the tongue. The Latakia as expected gives off a campfire smoky taste and the Perique is slightly spicy and earthy. The Orientals are definitely there and give a tangy note to the smoke and give a slightly incense like smell to the tobaccos room note. The Virginias, to me at least, were harder to detect amongst the other bold flavors, but is definitely there giving a slightly sweet undertone though not as sweet as Blackhouse, which is mentioned in the review below as well. The room note of this blend as should be expected is bold and smoky, although unlike that of cigarette smoke, this one tends to smell like a campfire which is tolerated moderately well by the wife. The tobacco required no relights and burned down to a fine white and gray ash that made for easy cleaning of the pipe when I was finished with the bowl. Overall, I have been quite impressed with this new blend From Russ and will more than likely keep it in my rotation as it is reminiscent of Blackhouse and WhiteKnight, both of which I enjoy, but at a much more affordable price point. I recommend this blend to anyone who enjoys bold English and Balkan blends with a Latakia forward flavor.

Drawing Room consists of brown and black ribbon cut tobaccos. The browns are long and stringy and the blacks are broad and short. Moisture level is a little dry but smoke ready. Pouch note is smoky Latakia, sour Izmir, and sweet Virginias.

Hearth & Home’s Drawing Room is an Oriental forward Balkan blend. The Izmir is sour and tangy. There is plenty of Smoky Latakia but it’s not as predominant as it is in other Hearth & Home Balkans. The Perique is very light and adds an overall spicy character which complements the sour Izmir.

I would describe Drawing Room as a medium Balkan blend. Some might say a lighter version of Hearth & Home’s Cerberus.

There are plenty of pipe smokers who enjoy the tang of sour Oriental tobaccos in which case Drawing Room could be a very desirable choice. However, I'm discovering that I enjoy lighter aromatic Orientals more so than tangy sour Izmir, so two stars for this blend.
