For over two centuries, the blenders and spinners of Samuel Gawith, Kendal, have been producing the famous Kendal Twists. Coal miners, both underground and on the ground, have been chewing our Pigtails, whilst pipe smokers have savoured the rich flavours and slow burning characteristics of the thick Brown No.4 and Black XX. All of our twist tobaccos can be smoked either flavoured or un-flavoured. Some of our popular flavours are black cherry, rum, whiskey and apple. All twists are available pre-packed or on the roll. Because the process is almost entirely by hand, quality control ensures consistency of excellence.

Notes: Pigtail - thin, Bogie - medium, Irish - thick.

Another easy review, this time with less than a full bowl.

The effect is like bonging hot air, and it knocked my head off. This stuff is the reason men didn't live very long in the 17-1800's. Yes, it's tobacco, but it has no depth, no nuance, no harmonious exchange of blending and no complexity of any kind. It starts off strong and full and finishes like the exhaust pipe of a bus. If you like this kind of flavor, find a cigarette smoker and empty his ashtrays in your mouth. Swish the ashes around in your mouth for awhile and enjoy.

Absolutely not recommended for anyone with discerning taste buds - at least if they want to keep them.

UPDATE 11/28/10

I received some of this from an internet pipe buddy who suggested that since it had been aging in his cellar for almost 3 years, it was likely mellower and more flavorful than the new tin I smoked from in the review above. Being a brave and silly soul, I tried it. I made it halfway through the bowl before discarding - by sheer force of will.

My review above stands except for one small thing... I'm no longer sure this is even tobacco. It's not the strongest blend I've ever smoked but it's by far the harshest. If it were a cigar, it would be a Dutch Masters that has been lying open on the ground for 90 days in the heat of summer and pelted with all manner of precipitation, both natural and man-produced. I can't imagine anyone enjoying this. But then again, Neil Diamond had a long, prosperous career, so there is no accounting for taste in this world. All of this silly prose is just my way of saying try this at your own risk. If you enjoy it, more power to you.

The bold Virginias offer a lot of smokey, woody dirt, floral vegetative grass, and fermented dark fruit. It also has a toasted quality and touch of spice to it. I get a sense of black tea and leather, too. The nicotine level is high. Needs some dry time after you slice it. Burns slow, has a little harsh bitterness, and sports a consistent, rich, full bodied flavor. Doesn’t bite. Requires plenty of relights and leaves moisture in the bowl. Not as complex a smoke as my description appears, and certainly not for the faint of heart. The room note will chase away your friends, family, dog and spirits, unless the latter are in a bottle. Your rating will depend upon how much you like very strong tobacco.

I don't understand the negative reviews - this is a strong, no nonsense tobacco. Full virginia with no additives which gives a real tobacco flavour. You get one hell of a nicotine hit with this baby and although you have to take time to load it well, the result is excellent. Man up and try this wonderful stuff

Once this settles in, it is an excellent smoking, sweet, pure tobacco. Much less sharp or edgy than Cockstrong or Picayune. Smokes clean and dry through the bowl. Floral essences wind their way through the smoke, along with an anise or licorice note. Very tasty. 4*.

Reading other reviews I thought I would dislike this. Do like a strong smoke, but not harsh. This ain't harsh at all. Have inhaled just to see what happens and not overwhelmed at all. A real, proper baccy that I will buy again. Just have to see how I feel when I finish the bowl!

(12/02/12 Had to update. This is a wonderful tobacco. Can't describe taste but very tasty to me. You get loads of thick smoke. Very pleasant room note, but don't know what non-smokers or even non-pipesmokers will think!)

Very delicious dark pressed tobacco for the lover of ropes and plugs. Comes as a thick, hard pressed lump of shiny black tobacco, smelling faintly of smoke like lapsang souchong tea, with an earthy, leathery tobacco smell underneath.

Chop off a few slices with a sharp pocketknife, dont worry if they are irregular, you are slicing plug, not making flakes. Some thick clumps and some finer ribbons is ideal. Rub it together and fill a clay pipe, and fire up for old fasioned smoking pleasure. Very enjoyable out of doors in a howling, freezing gale, it cheers the heart. The flavour is slightly smokey, in a way unlike Latakia, more like bacon perhaps, wood, peat and autumn leaf smoke. Slight sweetness, earthy, leathery and woody flavours can be detected. The flavour remains constant throughout. Very rustic in character.

It is rather strong, but not overwhelming, not so strong as the bogies. It is not harsh like the bogies either, but is smooth, and burns cool even in the strongest wind. It never bites, although can get a little rough if let to go out and then relit much later.

A lump of this, a clay, a penknife and some matches should be in every mans pocket on a cold and windy day outdoors.

Let me start with the apparent confusion over the name, there are a number of tobaccos with similar names emanating from SG and G & H, albeit they have reunited, and operate under the one roof now. This review is for Kendal Black Twist XXX, the X's denoting the diameter of the 'rope'. Purchased somewhat capriciously, and with a hint of obdurate willfullness, not to mention devil-take-the-hindmost, and now tried. The verdict; I will let the cut slice dry out next time. Cut slice (about 3mm thick) was pulled apart, the leaves teased out and torn, and gently rubbed, despite only softly packing the, now smaller fragments of leaves managed to obstruct the draw hole, and so were repacked with a spike protruding from the draw hole at the base of the chamber. As reported by others in that it did not readily take a light, I found this to be no problem, and whilst the twist is moist, it isn't overly so. That said I shall permit the tobacco to breathe, after rubbing out, for about half an hour before packing my pipe.

Strong, yes it most definitely is. It also leaves a taste on your tongue, again others have found this unpleasant, I can only say it is marginally distracting. It is however not a tobacco that will be in my daily rotation, two or three times a week will suffice. It does not bite, always a plus where I am concerned. Will it ghost the pipe I have used, this I suspect is possible. An update on this aspect will follow, dotage permitting.

Satisfaction; not entirely sure, however I have only smoked it the once so far, and will await the smoking of a few more bowls before judgement is passed. It is only my second foray into twists, the first being many years ago, the memories long lost to the fog of time.

I recommend pipe smokers to try this twist with the caveat that if you have a low tolerance of nicotine, then perhaps it is one best for laying down and avoiding.

With regard to ghosting I can unequivocally state this is a BIG YES. Note to self; purchase some cobs for trying new tobaccos.

Boy I have a bruise on my head. What has happened to me? Yes, you too can feel this way when you smoke this really strong tobacco. Stay away from this stuff if you have a heart problem. The nicotene is powerful enough to knock the steam off a mule fart.

Samuel Gawith - Finest Kendal Twist Black XX.

As many reviewers have said, this is a strong tobacco: I CAN'T inhale it.

At the start of the smoke I quite like it, the flavour's full but it seems okay: if I sip my pipe gently I get a mild smokiness with a pleasing sharpness. The problem arises if I puff harder: the amenable flavour becomes bitter, with a mild taste of liquorice in the background. It's fair to say, this takes the shine off it.

On the plus side, the smoke doesn't bite! That doesn't increase the rating though:

Not recommended.

I cant find much to recommend this blend. This is quite rare, i usually can find enjoyment in most blends, even ones that dont particularly suit me. I almost thought i was getting there with this one, too...but then i just didn't. To be fair, ive only probably smoked 12 bowls of the stuff. Utterly wrecked 2 tasting cobs and ghosted a meerschaum quite badly for a while too. The issue here is one of flavor: this blend produces one that i just cannot believe is their intent, or has anything to do with natural tobacco. It is petroleum like, as some have mentioned burning rubber. Motor oil has been thrown out there, and this i agree with too. It is the most pronounced and constant flavor throughout, and it is so disagreeable that i can't get around it. I like the nicotine level, i like some carmelized fat/meat notes that whisper in and out of tge experience, i like the construction of the rope itself. I just cannot abide the toxic mechanical flavor that is so obvious throughout. I even chewed the stuff, several times. But the offending flavor is also present when chewed. Cant recommend this in any way.

Obviously very similar to the (in)famous regular Black XX, it's just as strong, just as dark. Only not being quite as harsh made me think it might be (slightly) different and have me tip the rating a bit higher. Strong, straightforward, be prepared for a ride!

This makes a much better chewing tobacco than pipe tobacco.

Aaargh!! This is a pure, old-fashioned, uncased tobacco, full flavoured (to say the least of it) and murderously strong. I do - I really do - mean murderously strong. Oh, Lord!

It's very tedious to prepare for the pipe, and I found that it needed constant relighting (probably because I didn't take enough trouble to prepare it properly). The room note is horrendous.

There's plenty of flavour here, but not in a good way. If you like your baccy strong, rough and uncompromising, this is the horse for you; but be warned: this stuff is definitely not for the meek. When I can face smoking again, I'll not touch this. On the other hand, this is certainly a way to get closer to God.

It all depends on what you like; but, judging according to my own reaction to it, I wouldn't recommend it. It'll certainly kill the fleas on the cat, though. Be warned, by the way: it'll ghost up your pipe something awful. If you try it in a pipe you like, the memory will linger on for some time.

Some people actually chew this, apparently; which only goes to show that there are some mighty odd people in this world.

I thought I was tough, but this tobacco made me collapse. They said it was strong, so I had to try and ordered a 25g piece of rope from Synjeco... The look is incredible: a large rope, so tightly pressed that it looks like a piece of leather, very smooth , oily and shiny. I cut four thin slices and rubbed them in a little pipe, then lit... WHAM! It immediately struck a devilish blow, so strong that it made me wonder if it wasn't better for me to lay down the pipe and raise the white flag of defeat: this stuff made me cough like hell! I persisted, in pain (my throat hurt!) and suffocated by the thick smoke... The taste is not very deep, under the strong surface. Some sweetness, some spicyness, some licorice hints. After five minutes I had to give up, not much for the nicotine, but for the aggressiveness of the smoke to my throat and mouth... Subsequent bowls were a little better: no more dizziness and less harshness, but this is still too strong and tickling for me. A word of caution: don't underestimate this tobacco! Those who say it is overwhelmingly strong are not joking! This stuff is made for killing rhinoceros, not for smoking! I suggest Samuel Gawith's Brown Pigtail, instead, if you are looking for a nice rope tobacco.
